For years, subway tile has been a go-to choice in kitchens and bathrooms—and for good reason. It’s timeless, versatile, easy to maintain, and works with nearly every design style.
But somewhere along the way, subway tile got labeled as “basic.”
As a kitchen and bath designer, I’m here to tell you that subway tile is anything but boring. The secret isn’t just the tile itself—it’s how you use it.
Here are my favorite designer tricks to turn a simple subway tile into a custom, luxury statement.
1. Play With Color
White subway tile will always be a classic, but don’t overlook soft blues, warm taupes, sage greens, and rich earthy tones. A subtle color change can completely transform the mood of your bathroom.
- Colorful decorative hand towels
- Glass jars for bath salts
- Spa-style trays
- Faux eucalyptus stems for shower styling
2. Change the Layout
Subway tile can be stacked vertically, stacked horizontally, offset, herringbone, or even used to create dramatic feature walls.
A simple 2×8 tile installed in a herringbone pattern instantly feels custom and designer driven.
3. Mix Materials
One of my favorite ways to make subway tile feel expensive is to pair it with natural stone, marble, textured mosaics, or a contrasting niche.
The combination of smooth, glossy tile with organic materials adds depth and interest.
4. Choose Statement Hardware
The right hardware can completely change the personality of your shower. Warm brass creates a luxurious, boutique-hotel feeling, while polished nickel and matte black can create a more modern look.
5. Don’t Forget the Details

The most beautiful bathrooms are about more than tile. Thoughtful styling turns a functional room into a spa experience.

These small details make your bathroom feel like a luxury retreat.
The Bottom Line
Subway tile has lasted over 100 years because it works. It can be traditional, modern, coastal, European-inspired, or luxury depending on the color, pattern, materials, and details you pair with it.
The difference between a basic bathroom and a breathtaking one isn’t the tile—it’s the design.
